Wahliss Scenic Plate #1

This is a superb plate made by Wahliss of Vienna , Austria in the later 19th century. Ernst Wahliss was an Austrian ceramicist who created ornate porcelain and earthenware vessels for European elites. This plate here is a nice example of his work though he is better known for his figurines. The plate is very much in the so called Royal Vienna style with a large portrait in the center of copy of Rembrandt's painting of the Prodigal Son in the Tavern, usually understood to be a picture of himself and his wife Saskia. It is of a well off couple having some food and fun. The gentleman is dressed in his finest clothes including his sword and feathered hat and drinking out of a tall glass while the lady is sitting in his lap. A nice table with some silverware and dishes on it and draperies on the side. One cannot say enough about the quality of this painting! All hand painted off course. The cobalt blue ground rim with the superb gold trim which is partially raised make this a very stunning plate. A nice gold band with a raised design to the edge of the well. These types of plates are very elegant and decorative which is why they are so popular. The plate is in perfect condition as shown. The piece is 9.625 inches in diameter and just over 1 inch tall so a very nice size. It is marked underneath with Wahliss , Wien in red as well as the title of the scene in red as shown. Impressed marks F & M for the maker of the blank. Rembrandt Selbstbildniss mit seiner Gattin Saskia . I actually have this exact scene on an original Vienna plate from the Sorgenthal period which I find amazing. Please email me for more information or photos.
